Zcash, shielded digital money.

Born as a 'private evolution' of Bitcoin, Zcash uses zero-knowledge cryptography to hide amounts and recipients. Here's how it works, in plain words.

01 · What it is

Bitcoin with built-in privacy

Zcash (ZEC) was created in 2016 as a fork of Bitcoin, led by cryptographer Zooko Wilcox and a team of scientists. The goal was ambitious: keep everything that makes Bitcoin valuable while adding what it lacks — transaction privacy.

Its secret weapon is zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs): a mathematical technique that lets you prove a transaction is valid without revealing who sends, who receives, or how much. Like saying: "I guarantee I have the money and I'm only spending it once," without showing your bank account.

One important detail: in Zcash, privacy is optional. Transactions can be "shielded" (private) or "transparent" (visible as on Bitcoin). It's a trade-off that makes it more widely accepted by regulated exchanges than other privacy coins.

Launch

Zcash launched on October 28, 2016, the first large-scale real-world use of zero-knowledge proofs.

21 million

Limited supply like Bitcoin

ZEC also has a maximum supply of 21 million units, with issuance decreasing over time.

zk-SNARKs

Zero knowledge

Shielded transactions hide sender, recipient and amount, while still being verifiable by the network.

02 · How it works

The key concepts

01

Shielded and transparent transactions

Transparent addresses ('t') expose movements on the blockchain; shielded ones ('z') protect the details. If a transaction also involves a transparent address, data on that side stays visible: using a Zcash wallet alone doesn't guarantee privacy.

02

Zero-knowledge proofs

The wallet creates a cryptographic proof (zk-SNARK): nodes check the funds are valid and not double-spent without knowing the sender, recipient or amount of the shielded parts. The proof verifies the network's rules, not the payment's legality.

03

Mining and issuance

Miners collect transactions into blocks and compete via proof of work to add them to the chain. Nodes verify blocks and proofs of shielded transactions; the ZEC reward periodically decreases towards the 21-million cap.

04

Wallets

To receive privately, choose a wallet that supports shielded addresses, check the address type before sending, and run a small test. Not all services and wallets support shielded transfers: a transparent transaction reveals details on-chain.

05

How shielded funds are spent

The wallet creates a cryptographic 'note' when you receive shielded ZEC. To spend it, it proves control without publishing it; a spending identifier (nullifier) lets the network detect a possible second use without revealing which note you spent.

06

Where the protection ends

Cryptography hides data on the shielded blockchain, not what you reveal elsewhere. A service may know your identity, and sharing an address, a receipt or network information can reduce your privacy.

03 · Getting started

First steps with Zcash

  1. 1

    Understand when it makes sense

ZEC is interesting if you care about the privacy of your payments. Remember: privacy is not illegality, but tax and regulatory rules still apply.

  2. 2

    Choose where to buy it

Non-custodial services let you get ZEC without creating an account: still check availability in your country. At the bottom of the page you'll find a selection of platforms.

  3. 3

    Use a shielded wallet

After buying, move your funds to a wallet with shielded addresses to truly enjoy Zcash's privacy.

  4. 4

    Protect your keys

Enable two-factor authentication where available and save your wallet's recovery phrase offline, never as a photo on your phone.

05 · Frequently asked questions

The answers you're looking for

Is Zcash 100% anonymous?+

Shielded transactions offer very strong privacy, but perfect anonymity doesn't exist: if you use exchanges with identity verification, the entry and exit points remain traceable. Avoid moving funds between transparent and shielded addresses if privacy is a priority.

Why do some exchanges not list it?+

Because of anti-money-laundering regulations: some jurisdictions impose restrictions on privacy cryptocurrencies. Zcash, having optional privacy, is still more widely accepted than Monero.

What's the difference from Bitcoin?+

The basic mechanics are similar (21 million supply, mining, halving). The big difference is the possibility of fully private transactions thanks to zk-SNARKs.

Is ZEC a good investment?+

We cannot and will not give financial advice. Evaluate the technology, the risk and the volatility: privacy cryptocurrencies are among the most volatile assets on the market.
